This sign warned me there were a few curves up ahead on the road. I would need to slow down a little to navigate them.
Roads are not always straight when we travel from place to place. The course of our lives is not always straight either. We want to follow the path God has laid out for us, but we run into curves in the roads. Distractions and temptations come up. We get side-tracked and at times lose our way.
When we find ourselves getting off the straight path God has set for us, we need to pray the prayer David prayed”
“Lead me, O Lord, in Your righteousness because of my enemies – make straight Your way before me.” (Psalm 5:8)
When we are being led astray and taking too many curves off the path God has laid out we must return our focus to Him, follow His GPS and don’t deviate from the directions given. God knows what’s best for us, much better than we know ourselves. Listen to Him.
We need food to survive, but it should be healthy food, such as bread, fruits, vegetables, and dairy. We also need water. Just eating bread all the time will not keep a person healthy.
When Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness He was very hungry. He had been fasting for 40 days. The first temptation by Satan was to appeal to that hunger. He wanted Jesus to turn the stones into bread.
“Jesus answered, ‘It is written, Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” (Matthew 4:4)
Jesus was not going to fall for Satan’s schemes. He was rooted in the Word of God and on that He relied.
For us, as believers, our bread to fill our hunger could be our weekly fix of going to church each Sunday. Corporate worship is important, but more is needed to survive and grow in our faith. We need to be in The Word, reading and studying it. Knowing what God says is the weapon we need to stand up to Satan. We must have a firm foundation of knowledge from God, which we get from the Bible.
We do not live on bread (corporate worship) alone. We need the sustenance we can get only from God’s Word to survive Satan’s temptations.
What a great name for an ice cream shop. Who hasn’t been tempted by good ice cream, especially on a hot summer day. If you’re on a diet the temptation is even stronger. We face temptations all the time. Some are fun, like the ice cream. Others are very serious. An alcoholic is tempted to take a drink. A person is tempted by someone else to cheat on his/her spouse. A child may be tempted by his peers to steal something. Temptations are all around us because this world is Satan’s kingdom. He wants to snag as many of us as possible. God, however, does not leave us by ourselves to fight these battles. I Corinthians 10:13 tells us, “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” God isn’t going to let Satan box you into a corner. God will always show you a way out. You must choose. Do you give into the temptation or do you stand strong and use God’s way out?
