Those of you who have gardens know that the type of seed you plant is the type of crop you’ll get. When you plant a carrot seed you don’t have to wonder what will come up. You know you’ll get carrots. When you plant tomatoes and the bush is healthy you’ll get delicious red tomatoes. If the bush is shriveled and dead there won’t by any edible tomatoes to pick.
Jesus used this analogy in discussing good and evil. “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes or grapes from briers. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.” (Luke 6:43-45)
We can’t fake it. Just like an apple tree can not bear oranges, an evil man will show his true colors. A person with evil in his heart will not show acts of kindness. Likewise, if good is in a person’s heart he’s not going to do acts which are evil.
Jesus can change someone’s heart from evil to good, but the person has to want the change.
What is at the root of your heart – good or evil? If you don’t know the love of Jesus, do you want to change your heart? First step – find someone to talk to who has Jesus on the throne of his/her heart. Start the journey of becoming a good tree bearing good fruit. It can be done.
