” If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also.If someone takes your coat, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you.” (Luke 6:29-31)
Did you notice the Golden Rule in the above verses? Jesus tells us how we are to treat our enemies. This command is very difficult to follow, especially in today’s society of self-gratification.
Jesus also tells us, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you to love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:43-45 a)
God gave us these standards to live up to. Jesus lived by these standards setting the example for us to follow. Jesus even prayed from the cross for the people who were killing Him, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34)
We are to try as hard as we can to live by God’s commands. God knows we are not perfect and because of our human nature we can never be perfect. However, we can strive to reach that standard as close as we are able.
Imagine what this world would be like if everyone followed the Golden Rule?
