Children hate rules. They want to do what they want with no restrictions. However, we know they need those rules, those boundaries to keep them safe and to learn how to behave in society. Sometimes as adults we’re not crazy about rules either. Just like the children we need boundaries to keep us on the right path. If everyone did what they wanted our society would fall apart.
God gave Moses the Ten Commandments (Deuteronomy 5) as rules to follow to be right with God and with other people. Jesus was asked, ” ‘Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’ Jesus replied, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.’ ” (Matthew 22:36-40)
In just two commandments Jesus encompassed all Ten which were given to Moses. Love God and love your neighbor. Two rules we should all be able to live by.
