Church sign in Borculo, MI.

The emotions we humans have are fickle. One minute we like someone and the next we hate him/her. Marriages end because “the love is gone”. We play with other people’s emotions sometimes to get what we want. Thank goodness our God is not like we are. If His emotions were as fickle as ours we all would be in big trouble. We don’t have to worry about that. God’s love for us is changeless and never ending. He doesn’t like what we do a lot of the time, but He never stops loving us. “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son,that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) God gave Jesus to suffer for us and save us. There’s no more powerful love than that. God will never stop loving us even if we stop loving Him. He wants us with Him in eternity. He will never hate us or turn His back on us. Do you want to feel this love in your life? Accept Jesus as the Savior He is and you will experience a love you’ve never felt before.

A field ready for planting in Allegan County, MI.

This is the time of year the farmers are getting their fields dug up and fertilized. Soon the planting will begin. Once planted the farmer needs to continue watering and tending the field. However, he has no control how the seeds will grow. He just has to wait and see, hoping for a good crop. There are other fields which need planting, watering, and tending. We are the farmers. They are the fields consisting of non-believers who need to hear the word of Christ. In I Corinthians 3: 6 & 8 Paul tells us, “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor.” We need to remember our job is to plant and/or water. We can not make someone become a believer. That’s God’s job. As long as we are getting the Word out, planting those seeds, we are doing what God wants us to do . Don’t be discouraged if you don’t see results. That might not happen for years. Just keep planting those seeds and let God do the rest.

There is definitely a cost to low living. If the activity is heavy drinking, you find out the next day the problems of life have not gone away. Plus, now you can add a splitting headache and nausea to the list. If the activity is sex outside of marriage you worry about if you’re pregnant or caught a life threatening disease. The “high cost” of low living is a lot more than the issues already listed. Jesus tells of this cost. “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.’ . . . Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.’ . . . Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life. (Matthew 25: 31-34, 41, 46). If you haven’t figured it out the low-living people are the goats. There’s still time to change your lifestyle. Things you are doing may be fun now, but look at the big picture. Where do you want to spend eternity?

Cows in a pasture in Allegan, MI.

My mother was raised on a farm. She told me when most or all of the cows are lying down during the day it is going to rain. I have found this to be true many times.  As a child I had a dog who would crouch by the door and shake when a storm was coming. The return of robins is a sign of Spring. There are many signs nature gives us.

Even tho’ we don’t know the exact time Jesus will return He has told us of some signs to look for regarding the coming of the end of the age. “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end it still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.”  (Matthew 24:6-8). It seems like in the last few years there’s been an increase of earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes. Are these the beginning signs? No one know for sure. Only God knows. If these are the beginning birth pains how is your life in relationship to God and Jesus Christ? How much time do we have? Who knows? Don’t put off exploring Jesus and what He has to offer. You don’t want to be caught at the end times and find you’ve missed your chance. Study the Bible. Look for other signs revealed. Nature might be telling us something.

A candle in the darkness.

If the power goes out at night or you are exploring a dark place a candle or flashlight comes in very handy. We can’t see anything at night without some sort of light source. This world is a dark place. Light needs to shine in it. Satan = dark, but God = light. How does God’s light shine in this world? Jesus tells us how in Matthew 5:14-16, “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” If Jesus is the Lord of your heart God’s light will shine through you and illuminate this dark world. Are you letting your light shine?

A slide in the play area near my home.

I remember going down slides as a child. However, our slides were not like the one in the picture. Ours were straight and made of metal, which got very hot in the sun. Sliding is fun, the taller the slide, the better. But there is a form of sliding which is not so fun. That is sliding on our obligations. Maybe you’ve said you’d serve on a committee or prepare a meal. Then when the time came to fulfill your obligation you had all sorts of excuses why you couldn’t at this time. We’ve all done that at some point in our lives. What about our obligation to God? Look at The Parable of the Great Banquet found in Luke 14:16-24. A man had invited several guests to his banquet. When everything was ready he told the guests to come. They were obligated to attend, but they all came up with excuses why they couldn’t. As children of God we have jobs to do to get His Word out or to help other people. Are we sliding on fulfilling what we know we should be doing?  Think for a minute. What obligation have you recently pushed to the side? Maybe now is the time to get busy for God instead of sliding past and doing nothing. No more excuses.

Electrical lines across US 31 between Grand Haven and Holland, MI.

In order for us to receive electrical power in our homes the electricity must be sent along power lines like the one shown in the picture. Heavy winds can knock down power lines leaving us in the dark until they can be repaired. We are at the mercy of those lines remaining strong and intact. Getting emotional and sometimes physical power is a different matter. This power comes from God. We do not have to depend on man-made lines to receive anything from God. We just need to tell God what is going on in our lives and ask for His help, His power. The line which transmits from God to us is the Holy Spirit. Nothing can stop the flow of this power once it’s started. No storms, no falling trees, no squirrels chewing on the lines can interfer with the delivery of God’s energy, God’s power. We need to start the process by going to Him, then look out. Power is on the way.
